Overview
An air shower is a specialised chamber designed to reduce contaminants from people or objects before entering a cleanroom or controlled environment. It is an essential component in cleanroom facilities where maintaining a controlled and sterile environment is critical.
Air showers are commonly used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, electronics manufacturing, and semiconductor fabrication, where maintaining cleanliness and controlling contamination is essential.
When the shower cycle is started by the operative, the shower controls lock the doors and run the fans to provide the airflow. (Note the shower has a low power usage with a highly efficient fan).
PBSC’s personnel air shower also known as an air shower room, air shower safe chamber, cleanroom air shower, and misting shower, comes in two designs:
- With the integrated Air Handling Unit (AHU) on the top of the shower
- With a separate AHU that has “Safe Change” filters.
Both options remove particles from the operative with high-velocity air jets. The integrated unit is designed to remove non-hazardous particles on entry into a controlled area.
The air shower is the latest design (please read more below) from PBSC which has been continually improved over the years and features either stainless-steel or powder-coated steel construction with interlocked float and toughened glass personnel doors. The shower has the final assembly in place and requires no cranes or special access on-site as the largest piece will fit through a single doorway.
Maximum clear opening – the door design has been refined to provide a maximum clear entry width with the frame finishing flush with the internal panels. (straight-through design only).
There are 9 x adjustable stainless-steel nozzles on both side walls, 18 nozzles in total.
As the operative enters the shower, the PLC automatically turns on the high-performance 24VDC LED light, which is powered by the PLC (no mains power in the shower cubicle).
The lowest nozzle is only 21.5cm from the finish floor level with a low-level return on each wall panel to the AHU built into the top of the shower cubicle.
When the shower cycle is started by the operative, the shower controls lock the doors and run the fans to provide the airflow below. (Note the shower has a low power usage with a highly efficient fan, the total power requirement is only 10Amps @ 110 – 230V, 50 to 60HZ, 1 Ph.)
- Clean Filter – 150 Pa· 32m/s at 5cm from the nozzles
- Dirty Filter – 300 Pa
- 28 m/s at 5cm from the nozzles
The system is available with a range of control panel options, the standard is a Siemens Logo, which can be provided with an Allen Bradley PLC or a Siemens S1200 PLC. The S1200 PLC comes with a touch screen in the shower (or on the PLC cabinet) to show the shower status alarms, which can be seen and cleared from the screen.
Regular maintenance and cleaning of air showers are essential to ensure optimal performance and prevent contamination build-up.
Available with Safe Change – Please contact PBSC for more information
Please see PBSC’s other shower information if the particles are hazardous and a safe change on the filter housing is required.

Introducing PBSC’s New Design
PBSC’s new design has been enhanced not only in aesthetics but also in functionality. The high-performance fans are now strategically fitted to each side wall, ensuring optimal airflow through each plenum for more effective decontamination for your personnel.
Air showers play a critical role in maintaining cleanliness and controlling contamination in controlled environments such as cleanrooms.
Correct design, installation, operation, and maintenance of the air shower is essential to ensure its effectiveness in preserving the integrity of the controlled environment and meeting regulatory requirements.
The air shower features either stainless-steel or powder-coated steel construction with interlocked float and toughened glass personnel doors, 9 x adjustable stainless-steel nozzles on both side walls, (18 nozzles in total).
Air shower type:
2-Door Straight – For straight-through transfer
2-Door Right Angle – For angled transfer
3-Door T-Section – For straight-through or angle transfer with the shower mounted between 3 rooms in a T-Section configuration.
1 – Powder Coated Zintec
2 – Stainless Steel 304
3 – Stainless Steel 316
Following on-site installation, PBSC offers a Planned Preventative Maintenance and Servicing Plan with extensive after-sales support service, including planned preventative maintenance programs, servicing, and spare parts.

Applications
The PBSC Decontamination Shower has been proven to minimise risks...
PBSC decontamination showers are used to clean personnel on entry or exit from areas with hazardous substances, including facilities within healthcare, medical research, pharmaceutical, and high containment, removing all traces of possible contamination from protective garments.
