A wide range of improved products for the Pirbright Campus Development
A Building to be proud of winning numerous awards …
The Pirbright Institute has been in existence for over 100 years, celebrating its centenary in 2014. First established as a tuberculosis testing station and has developed over the years to become one of the UK’s leading virus diagnostics and surveillance centres and is now also at the forefront of virus research.
The institute’s achievements over the past century have been many and varied but throughout this time it has continued to play a pivotal role in controlling and preventing some of the world’s most devastating diseases with the development of new and improved diagnostics and vaccines.
The Pirbright site redevelopment was given the green light in 2012 with the development of the state-of-the-art high containment laboratory “The Plowright Building” starting in 2013.
PBSC who are the leading manufacturer of clean room, high containment, personnel decontamination and material decontamination products around the world in association with Shepherds Construction, (now owned by Wates Group) provided containment products adapted to meet the requirements commissioned to successfully complete the BBSRC National Virology Centre – Plowright Campus based in Surrey, UK, which finished early 2014, accommodating 150 scientists to begin scientific activities early 2015.
Products:
- Glass Doors Cast In Frame
- APR Windows
- Barrier Hatches
- Inflatable Seal Doors
- Mechanical Seal Doors
- Dunk Tanks
- Material Decontamination Hatches
- Material Decontamination Chambers
Solutions & Results:
PBSC supplied a wide range of improved containment products with innovation to meet the needs of the Plowright development, including their showpiece glass doors with special cast-in frames with no hollow cavities and formaldehyde decontamination chamber with temperature, pressure and RH control to provide repeatable cycles with no/minimal paraformaldehyde clean up.
The Plowright Building has enabled a unique combination of fundamental and applied research into pathogenic diseases with potentially devastating impact, which is why PBSC meticulously engineered their containment and APR products, which met and exceeded leakage testing requirements, the reduced hollow cavities improved bio-decontamination risk reduction and the faster/improved material decontamination process (surface disinfection) are part of the Plowright Building becoming a world-class facility.
The Pirbright Institute has become the leading centre of excellence in research and surveillance of virus diseases and PBSC’s products, services and support have ensured this high containment laboratory’s essential work carried out can be done more efficiently.
“Preventing and controlling viral diseases”
Jamie Davis – Owner of PBSC
“I am proud to be part of the development of The Pirbright Institute. The Plowright building is documented to be one of the biggest investments in the science infrastructure containing our enhanced and improved high containment products helping to provide a national capability for research on viruses”
